So, I've been revisiting my account to post some more Garry's Mod cartoons I've created and happened to glance at the "Browse more like this" pics off to the side of my pictures and was a bit stunned by the uh, rather adult nature of said pics.

Now, let me be clear that I have nothing against mature artwork, I just would prefer that it not be showing on the same page as my Gmod cartoons. So, I went into the settings to see if I'd messed something up when I uploaded my images.

First, I checked to make sure that I had chosen '"no" for "adult nature". Okay, that was correct.

Next, I checked the "category" path I'd chosen. It was "Cartoons & Comics / Digital Media / Comics / 3-Dimensional". That seemed accurate for my pics and innocuous enough. In fact, the examples shown were pretty similar to my cartoons.

But apparently, recently, a lot of adult and fetish artists have been using this category path. Sooo, I re-categorized by pics as "Fan Art / Digital Art / 3-Dimensional Art / Games" which seems to yield closer results.

I guess the take away from this is that you have to be careful which category path you put your work in if you want the "Browse More Like This" images on your page to actually be similar to your own work.

After about two years just looking at everyone else's cool artwork I've finally decided to post some of my Gary's Mod creation. Please critique if you have a moment to look them over.

Are comics, images and films done with Garry's Mod art? I think so. Here's my argument for GMod creations being art:
1) I just said the key word above. Creation. If what you do requires you to think, pose, pace, etc. then you're "creating". And creation is what art's about. (To me anyway.)
2) Just because you're using GMod to create your images/films doesn't invalidate it as art. That's like saying movies are not art because you use a camera. Or that paintings are not art because you use a brush and canvas. GMod is simply a tool that allows people to create. I've heard the argument that Garry's Mod is "cheating" because it doesn't require "skill". That's bunk. Most of the people making this argument haven't even TRIED GMod, much less actually created anything with it. To them, I issue this challenge. Go look at a good film or comic made with Garry's Mod . Now fire up GMod yourself and attempt to recreate it. Ahhhh... Not so easy is it? So much for the "doesn't require skill" argument. Like all artistic tools, Garry's Mod requires practice to master. (Though you can jump in right away and start doing so many interesting things...) The point here is that Gmod is a tool. What you create using it is a product of your imagination. And that's art. Even Roger Ebert admitted that imagery in games can be artistic. Yes, yes, I know all about the uproar he caused when he stated that games, in and of themselves, were not art. And I'm not here to stir that nasty pot again. I just want to point out a quote from him...
"To my knowledge, no one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great dramatists, poets, filmmakers, novelists and composers. That a game can aspire to artistic importance as a visual experience, I accept. But for most gamers, video games represent a loss of those precious hours we have available to make ourselves more cultured, civilized and empathetic."
   —Roger Ebert
Note the second sentence. Now that seems pretty clear to me. Never mind the arguments about whether games are art or not, even Mr. Ebert agrees that game art is, well, art. So whether you are chiseling stone, painting on a canvas, filming on a digital camera or creating renders in a program -art is art no matter what tools you are using.
3) I've looked at a lot of films created with Garry's Mod (and more recently Source Film Maker) and many of them have been more than just comedies. Some of them have been profoundly sad, or inspirational. And anything that can move you to laugh, cry or hope is doing the exact same thing that films are. And that's what art does, it moves you in some way.

Well that's enough gassing out of me for now.
